When moving with kids, depending upon their age, they need to be prepared by the parents in advance for the moving challenge. Infants, of course, are better off being cared for away from the origin and destination residences until the house move is complete. Their need for much attention is extremely diverting from the focus of moving house. So, parents should prepare well in advance for a separate place for their infant on move day. However, if due to circumstances, infants must be present during the home move - try to have a portable playpen handy and something in which to hold diapers, bottles, clothes, etc. If the weather is cold or hot have appropriate clothing or blankets handy. If the infant is of age to crawl or walk have toys for them in a playpen because this is where they should be when not being held. This way, they won't get underfoot and get hurt. |
Beyond infancy, walking and talking younger children are better off away from the moving activities. But, if they can not be somewhere else, try (if possible) to have another responsible adult present to respond to their needs while you are involved in the furniture moving activities. Walking and talking younger children can get under foot and can be severely hurt if something falls on them or if they crawl on top of something and it collapses. Teenagers can be a big help during moving when they carry lightweight boxes or small furnishings to and from the truck. They should not carry pictures, lamps, shades or other light fragile items since they tend to play around a bit during their attempts to help with moving and they could inadvertently damage these kinds of things. |
