At approximately 25 miles north of Chicago lies the Village of Deerfield. Covering an area of about 7 miles, part of Deerfield is in Cook County and part is in Lake County. It’s bordered to the west by Riverwoods, to the east by Highland Park, to the north by Bannockburn and Lake Forest, and to the south by Northbrook. The name Deerfield came from a settler named John Millen who wanted to honor his hometown of Deerfield, Massachusetts, (although there is still a large number of deer in the area!)
Perfect for growing families, Deerfield was named by Businessweek as one of the 50 best places to raise children. These rankings were based on school test scores, costs of living, cultural and recreational activities, number of schools in the area and risk of crime. With its several parks and many opportunities for recreational activities, Deerfield provides its residents with lots of things to do, especially outdoors. The village’s energy sustainability initiatives along with its green practices and residential protocols, its efforts towards a clean, friendly and natural environment are much appreciated by the families who live there.
One of the most beautiful features of the community is the Deerfield Historic Village. Founded and maintained by the Deerfield Area Historical Society, the Village is an outdoor museum of five historic buildings. Among these are the Caspar Ott House, which was built in 1873, and is considered to be the oldest building in Lake County, the George Luther House (built in 1847), the Bartle Sacker Farmhouse (built in 1854), and a few replicas of a former carriage house and a red school house. In fact, all fourth graders spend a day learning in the school house.
With all that Deerfield has to offer for both children and adults, it’s no wonder that many families live in and love the community. With its many restaurants, shopping districts, parks and recreational areas, Deerfield provides its residents with beautiful natural surroundings along with educational and historical enlightenment.
