Dear Mr. Burrows:
This is just a note to tell you how very pleased we were about the move
to Milwaukee last week on April 10/11. The two Darrells, Howard and Stephan
formed a wonderful team that worked steadily, carefully, politely, and well
together. Nothing was damaged in any way and things were placed exactly as
we asked. The piano move was a work of art in and of itself. In fact they
seemed to know better where things went than we did.
A most outstanding quality about this fine group of men was their total
avoidance of complaining about anything. When heavy book boxes had to go
up or down a flight of steps, never was there a groan or snort. When I
apologized for them having to carry a huge armoire upstairs one or even two
flights of stairs (the home we are moving to was built in 1917 and has 10 ft.
ceilings down and 9 ft. up), the response was always, "Not to worry; its just part
of the job."
I made sandwiches for them on both days and they were all deeply
appreciative. On the second day when they unloaded in Milwaukee one of the
guys informed me that I had left the meat out of his second sandwich. I told
him that this was because it was Passover and that he had been "passed
over." I filled the sandwich properly and we all had a good laugh.
I hope that the same crew can do the second segment of our move on
May 17. There will be much less furniture at that time and lots of boxes from
the basement, garage, and my studio at Northwestern. I am hoping that they
can finish it all in one day but will defer to your judgement about the number of
men in the crew, and trucks, after getting advice from Darrell Hampton. If six
men will facilitate the move in one day, do it that way. Thanks again for
everything.
